Brief thoughts on Memento

When we first started watching this film I found it a bit hard to follow, but now that I've gotten into it I find it intriguing. The idea of a person with about a 15 minute span of memory is odd enough, but to mix that with the backwards progression of the story, makes this quite an original film. I believe that Carrie Ann Moss' character was the murderer, and what was written on the picture would be either "she is the one", "kill her" or something to the effect of "I love her". Interestingly enough Mr. Bennett posed this question in class, citing "she is the one" as an example, Does that mean we are being told the actual story, or a red herring? I wonder...

  1. Well "she is the one, kill her" would be irrelevant and impossible, as the person that raped Leonard's wife is a man.

And we saw today what was written on the card, maybe you missed it, it said "she is not to be trusted". Teddy told Leonard to write it when they were in the car, but Leonard crossed it out when he saw his note for Teddy that said "don't believe his lies".

  2. Excellent observation Benny. It would be very hard for a woman to rape another woman.

  3. True, I think it's a good point that Benny makes, because I found it interesting that Leonard wrote "don't believe his lies" and stuck to it. My question is why does Leonard still trust Teddy in the scene where he calls him after stuffing Dodd in the closet.

  4. I didn't mean that she was the rapist, but that quite possibly she was somehow responsible for the murder. My theory is that her drug dealiong boyfriend was the killer, and she used Leonard to kill Teddy.

  6. Irina I think he was more apt to trust Teddy in the scene where they have Dodd in the closet, because he was there under the pretense of helping him, he mentioned to Leonard that he was the one who called him over, and he must've been telling the truth because how could he have found him in the first place, considering it was not his hotel room.

In the other scene, he "awakens" and Teddy surprises him in the car and Leonard almost attacks him, so he was probably suspicious just because of the way that he was "introduced" to Teddy. Anyway, that's my theory. You only get one chance to make a first impression, but Leonard is the exception.

  7. I might be mistaken, but in the scene where Leonard has Dodd in the closet, I don't think he looks at the back of Teddy's picture, where he wrote "do not believe his lies." So, he has no reason NOT to trust him, as he doesn't remember any reason not to nor does he read his note.
